What to wear to -A Prom
Have a prom coming up? At your wits end on what to wear? Well, leave your worries behind! This guide will make sure you look your fabulous best on your prom night. Get ready to scorch the dance floor! ;)
There are essentially 5 different body types-
- pear shaped
Now these can be further sub divided into 21 categories but we're going to focus on the fundamental 5.
- plump/ chubby
- Skinny girls should at all costs avoid tight fitting prom dresses and bodycons. Go for flowing hemlines, pleats and dresses layered around the hips to give a curvy impression. Bubble dresses give the illusion of a fuller waist. Accessorize the waist with belts and ribbons. I personally don't recommend tube dresses since they give the arms and shoulders a scarecrow like appearance. However, halter-dresses and plunging v-necklines look gorgeous on lean girls. Also, don't forget to show off that sexy back!
- Athletic girls can be of three kinds: top heavy (broad shouldered), musclebound, or proportionate but lean. Choosing the right prom dress for athletic girls shouldn't be tough if one knows which areas to highlight. First and foremost, show off your toned legs! Next, cinch your outfit at the waist with a belt or a ribbon to get an instant hourglass look. If you're broad shouldered, wear stylish noodle strap and spaghetti dresses with prints or textures concentrated on the lower half of your dress to guide the eyes to your hips and away from your shoulders. If you wear a strapless dress, then let loose curls fall on your shoulders to take away from the angularity. But always remember, don't overwhelm by showing too much skin. If you're going to expose your legs then keep a sober neckline and vice versa.
- Hourglass shaped girls should avoid exposing too much since they're already well endowed. Draw attention to your fab figure by all means, but the key is to be subtle. Embrace your curves but keep it chic and sophisticated! Avoid too much cleavage. Hourglass shaped women can pull off nearly any kind of dress. However, stay away from heavily beaded or over embellished dresses, they tend to make you appear heavier than you actually are and can leave you looking disproportionate. Corset or bodice topped dresses would accentuate your curves to the maximum while lifting your bust. Experiment with all kinds of necklines-strapless,halter, one sided shoulder strap, angular cuts, etc. You have a lot of option but be careful not to overdo it!
- Pear shaped girls should look for dresses that accentuate their bust and take attention away from the hips, to give a proportionate impression. Go for dresses with embellishments and luxurious patterns/textures around the neck and bust as this will add volume to your upper body. Cinch your dress under the bust to distract from your hips. Broad belts and empire waist lines will enhance your bust. Avoid straight cuts and silhouettes or dresses that are tight around the hips. Play with flirty hemlines.
- For plump/ plus size girls, the trick is to dress according to your shape and not your size. You may be bottom heavy, top- heavy or proportionate, in an extra size. Embrace your voluptuous body and don't feel afraid to flaunt those curves! Try silhouettes that accentuate your bust if you're bottom-heavy, or silhouettes that accentuate your hips if you're top heavy. Don't wear anything that is very tight around the tummy and give your body some room to breathe. But at the same time, don't end up choosing a shapeless smock! Try dark colors like black, midnight blue, dark violet, rich maroon, dark fuchsia etc, since they have a slimming effect on the body. Avoid too many prints or embellishments and stick to solid dark colors. Strictly avoid anything that is too flouncy or has too many layers or ruffles since this will add to the volume. Experiment with plunging neck lines, back-exposed dresses and sleeves. Remember all you need to carry of your fab prom look is plus size confidence!
